Jim Berchtold heads Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada’s consumer rights project, a team of over 50 Legal Aid Center employees who fight for the rights of low-income Nevada consumers to protect them from such things as fraudulent car sales, abusive debt collection, predatory payday and title lending, unfair and illegal housing practices and foreclosures, financial exploitation by guardians, and all manners of scams and deceptive trade practices.

Michael Kovac is the Chief Deputy Attorney General for the Nevada Office of the Attorney General’s Criminal Prosecutions Division. His portion of the presentation will address criminal laws that apply to housing-related fraud, examples of housing-related fraud he has prosecuted in the past, and the process for referring potential criminal matters to the Office of the Attorney General.

Eric Chavez is a HUD-Certified Housing Counselor with (CSNV) Community Services of Nevada. He began his work as a housing counselor during the financial crisis that led to the great recession and continues to help and educate Homebuyers and Homeowners through the challenges we face today. Eric is joining us today to talk about the current slate of mortgage assistance programs and the risks Homeowners must face going forward.
