Prosperity Now: The Next Chapter in CFED’s History

June 19, 2017 By Phil Johncock

CFED Has Become Prosperity Now!

Dear Supporter,

For 38 years, CFED has been a leader in the effort to create economic opportunity for all. Over the course of nearly four decades, our work has transformed from a focus on low-income entrepreneurs into a broader effort to fundamentally change the economy to work better for those with limited income—especially communities of color—in all facets of their lives.

Today marks another important evolution in our history. I’m proud to announce that as of this morning, CFED has become Prosperity Now.

Why did we decide to change our name? First and foremost, because everyone in this country deserves a clear path to financial security, wealth and prosperity, and we believe that a clearer brand identity will better position us to prepare those pathways. We also know that to be effective in addressing rocketing economic insecurity and an ever-growing racial wealth divide, we must cultivate a brand that is inclusive, generous and accessible. To read more about the Prosperity Now name and the bold vision it embodies, read my latest blog post on our brand-new website.

As thrilled as we are about the exciting new changes that Prosperity Now will bring, I want to underscore that much will remain unchanged. Our vision of putting prosperity within reach for everyone in this country—particularly those who have been traditionally excluded from opportunity—remains the same. In fact, our transformation to Prosperity Now represents our strengthened commitment—to you, and to the communities you serve.

All week, and in the months to come, we will share more about the exciting changes on the horizon and what they mean for you. In the meantime, you can explore all we have in store by browsing our new website (prosperitynow.org) and following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

In partnership,

Andrea Levere, Prosperity Now President

P.S. Please add Prosperity Now (noreply@prosperitynow.org) to your Safe Senders list so you continue to receive messages from us!

New Nevada Law Tightening Rules on Loan Servicing Companies

June 16, 2017 By Phil Johncock

New Nevada law is closing loan loop holes for Nevadans.

“Closing these crucial loopholes will give Nevadans a fighting chance to get back on their feet.” -Assemblyman Edgar Flores

This is an important step, but more needs to be done. Consumers should expect to be more thoroughly vetted before receiving any short term, payday or signature loans.

“What does that law look like moving forward? How will it be implemented? It’s positive that we’ve had some change. What is it really going to do?” -Nancy Brown, President of Opportunity Alliance Nevada

Experts urge Nevada lawmakers to act to end racial wealth divide….

May 12, 2017 By Phil Johncock

There is a wealth gap between white families and those of color, an issue that experts say Nevada lawmakers can help solve.  Solana Rice of CFED and Opportunity Alliance Nevada’s President, Nancy Brown, spoke on May 9, 2017 before the Senate Committee on Revenue and Economic Development and the Assembly Committee on Taxation, telling lawmakers what they can do to help close the growing racial wealth gap.

“The purpose of this presentation was is not to point fingers but to provide an understanding of policy history that have kept minorities from building wealth and what can be done now and in the future to change the course of history.”
