Nevada Scorecard 2019

Millions of U.S. Families Face Economic Uncertainty Despite Reports of a “Healthy Economy”

New Research Shows Exacerbated Vulnerability Along Racial Lines at State Level

Washington, D.C. – Despite headlines touting America’s booming economy, the reality is that millions in the US are living in financial uncertainty. According to new research from Prosperity Now (formerly CFED), an alarming number of families don’t have the resources to withstand an economic downturn, which many analysts predict is around the corner.

The 2019 Prosperity Now Scorecard shows that millions of families are either struggling to make ends meet, or are just one emergency away from a financial disaster. Forty percent of American households lack a basic level of savings. According to the Scorecard data, these “liquid asset poor” households don’t even have enough savings to live at the poverty level for three months if their income was interrupted. The data is even worse for people of color with nearly 57% of households of color being liquid asset poor.

For the first time, the 2019 Scorecard includes ranks the states on racial disparities—the gaps in 26 outcome measures between White residents and residents of color—and factors this into a state’s overall performance. Prosperity Now is increasing its focus on racial economic inequality because, as the data illustrates, structural inequality in the United States means that race and ethnicity have an outsized impact on economic well-being. Black, Latino, Native American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander people fare worse across all Scorecard outcomes and issues.

“Even where there have been some gains, the gaps between White households and households of color have persisted or widened. It was time to be explicit about the impact race has on economic outcomes and to center race in our conversations about solutions,” said Kasey Wiedrich, Prosperity Now Director of Applied Research. “If this inequity is the reality during a ‘booming’ economy, how will households of color fare when the next economic downturn hits?”

The Scorecard also examines the policy choices of lawmakers at all levels of government.
Additionally, it illustrates how those choices affect the ability of households—especially households of color and those with limited income—to create a more prosperous future. The Scorecard recommends policies that first and foremost serve the individuals and families whose lives they intend to improve while also building economic strength and resiliency in the broader communities in which we live together.

Financial Security Taskforce

January 10, 2018 By Phil Johncock

Financial Security Taskforce Explained

Senate Bill (SB) 118 was enacted during the 2017 Nevada Legislative session. This bill created the Nevada Taskforce on Financial Security, consisting of nine voting members, to conduct a comprehensive examination during the 2017-2018 legislative interim of the financial security of individuals and families in Nevada, including, without limitation, their opportunities to build assets and reduce debt. The Taskforce is required to submit a report of its findings and recommendations to the Legislative Counsel Bureau on or before September 1, 2018.

If you are interested in the financial security of Nevadans you will be interested in the Task Force on Nevada Financial Security interim committee hearings and listening session (webinar) below.

The 2nd hearing of this taskforce took place on Monday, January 22, 2018.

Solana Rice from Prosperity Now was the first presenter providing the Asset Score Card data for Nevada. Unfortunately, the numbers are not improving and Nevadans lack liquid savings for even small emergencies and lead the country in underbanked, meaning that Nevadans use alternative high cost financial services at a higher rate than any state in the nation.

There were presentations by experts on the financial security issues, barriers and needs of special population including veterans, disability community, Prison Reentry and health & human services.

Prosperity Now: The Next Chapter in CFED’s History

June 19, 2017 By Phil Johncock

CFED Has Become Prosperity Now!

Dear Supporter,

For 38 years, CFED has been a leader in the effort to create economic opportunity for all. Over the course of nearly four decades, our work has transformed from a focus on low-income entrepreneurs into a broader effort to fundamentally change the economy to work better for those with limited income—especially communities of color—in all facets of their lives.

Today marks another important evolution in our history. I’m proud to announce that as of this morning, CFED has become Prosperity Now.

Why did we decide to change our name? First and foremost, because everyone in this country deserves a clear path to financial security, wealth and prosperity, and we believe that a clearer brand identity will better position us to prepare those pathways. We also know that to be effective in addressing rocketing economic insecurity and an ever-growing racial wealth divide, we must cultivate a brand that is inclusive, generous and accessible. To read more about the Prosperity Now name and the bold vision it embodies, read my latest blog post on our brand-new website.

As thrilled as we are about the exciting new changes that Prosperity Now will bring, I want to underscore that much will remain unchanged. Our vision of putting prosperity within reach for everyone in this country—particularly those who have been traditionally excluded from opportunity—remains the same. In fact, our transformation to Prosperity Now represents our strengthened commitment—to you, and to the communities you serve.

All week, and in the months to come, we will share more about the exciting changes on the horizon and what they mean for you. In the meantime, you can explore all we have in store by browsing our new website (prosperitynow.org) and following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

In partnership,

Andrea Levere, Prosperity Now President

P.S. Please add Prosperity Now (noreply@prosperitynow.org) to your Safe Senders list so you continue to receive messages from us!
